Mt Coot-Tha lookout

Yesterday a group of 45 students and staff caught a bus and headed up to the Mt Coot-Tha lookout. This iconic Brisbane lookout features not only a great view of the city but has a Botanical Garden, Cosmic Planetarium, Herbarium and the many picnic, walking, bike and even horse tracks.

The weather was absolutely perfect and a great time was had by all!

It must’ve been a shock for the bus driver to suddenly have so many rowdy students on board!

Check out some more of Paul’s photos on the school facebook page! (Thanks for the pictures Paul!)

Easter & ANZAC Day long weekend activities

This coming weekend it’s Easter and the school is closed over the holiday period. It’s a great opportunity to get out and see some more of what Brisbane and the surrounding areas have on offer. Listed below are a few ideas that are either free or inexpensive things to do!

Brisbane City Walk                                                                                    The Brisbane City Walk is a self guided tour of Brisbane’s heart via three major parklands that green the city. It is designed as a leisurely walk, with frequent stops to take in highlights of Brisbane’s heritage. Plan to spend at least 2–3 hours on the walk. You can start your walk at any point on the route. It’s a circuit, so you’ll finish where you start. A good place to start is the Visitor Information Centre, Queen Street Mall.

For more information go to the following site. http://www.ourbrisbane.com/files/bcw_maptext_01.pdf

South Bank                                                                                               There is always something to do at South Bank.  With its beach in the middle of the city and swimming pools and fountains, South Bank is the perfect place to while away the day. South Bank also has great markets and buskers (although there’s no charge for either of these, it’s good to give at least a gold coin if you’ve watched a busker’s act).

South Bank has dozens of restaurants with many cuisines to choose from. Some within South Bank have wonderful views over the river and city, others (like the pubs at the Plough Inn and Ship Inn) are in historic buildings that hint at the industrial past of the area.

For more information see:  http://www.visitsouthbank.com.au/

Shorncliffe                                                                                                Jump on the train and head out to Shorncliffe! Shorncliffe is one of Brisbane’s hidden gems and those who’ve discovered its delights would like it to stay that way! Situated on the bay with views to Moreton Island, Shorncliffe has a sleepy coastal town feel and even an hour in its environs can leave you feeling rested and rejuvenated.

There are plenty of fish and chip outlets along the foreshore and there are few things more pleasant than eating a takeaway by the beach, with seagulls squawking and a salty breeze blowing the heat away.

Daisy Hill Koala Centre                                                                               25 km south-east of Brisbane, and part of a greater region known as the koala coast, Daisy Hill Koala Centre is situated in the open eucalypt forest at Daisy Hill Forest Reserve and is a bushland retreat for koalas and other native animals. It is open every day (except Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday) from 10am – 4pm. At the centre you can see koalas up close, though you won’t be able to touch them as they are wild animals and handling is not permitted.

ANZAC Day Parade                                                                                      It’s a time of reflection, of thankfulness, of remembrance. It’s ANZAC Day in Brisbane. And in 2011, 95 years after that fateful landing on Gallipoli beach, we will gather in the city centre and many of the suburbs to pay our respects to our servicemen and women. The march will take place between 10am and 1pm on Monday 25 April. The march commences in George Street, turning right into Adelaide Street, past the saluting Dias in King George Square, turning right into Creek Street and right again into Queen Street. The city’s more sombre dawn service will take place at exactly 4.28am on Monday 25 April at the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square, Adelaide Street.

Soccer at the park

On Wednesday a group of students and teachers enjoyed an afternoon out at the Brisbane botanical gardens.

Of course the main reason was to have a game of soccer but there were also those who just wanted to enjoy the fresh air and relax after a hard day of work and  study!

I’m sure it was quite a novel experience having to play around the trees growing on the soccer pitch! Who is that person who keeps kicking the ball out???

The supporters!

GV Brisbane students fund raise for Japan

Students at GV Brisbane are helping to raise funds for those affected by the devasting earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The fundraising idea was started by a group of Japanese students in the school who, assisted by other students have made hundreds of origami paper cranes. Donations are being made by the other students in the school and they can then take a crane home.

.A host mother has also helped with the fund raising appeal by baking a number of cakes for the students and staff to be able to enjoy and then donate money to the fund. It’s great to see students and staff helping in this small way to give something to the many people affected so badly by these events.

To donate to the fund please see Candy at the front reception or any of those involved.

Our Saudi Group Delivers Chocolate Gifts for Valentine’s Day!

Our new group of Saudi students are making themselves very popular around school with their generosity and their desire to get to know their classmates.

Making new friends at GV Brisbane

Last week GV Brisbane said Salaam (Hello in Arabic) to a new group of Saudi students. These lucky students will be spending up to a year at GV before they go on to learn Helicopter Maintenance at Aviation Australia. The students made themselves very welcome on their first day by going around to each classroom delivering chocolate gifts for everyone. They are very excited to be in Australia and to start making friends from all around the world. For many of them this is their first time abroad. All of the students are very keen football fans — we can see a Saudi vs Brazil football challenge in the near future.

GV MasterChef Final

Yesterday the much anticipated GV MasterChef Final was held and our contestants battled it out for the title of 2010 GV MasterChef!

It was a very tense competition with our three teams, Team 1: Jonas and Nathalia; Team 2: Harna and Vanda; and Team 3: Rina and Oriana cooking up some amazing dishes. The teams were given a shorter time frame and more limited budget to work with, but the flexibility of no required ingredient, so they could cook anything they wished! It led to them using their most creative cooking skills, and we were all very impressed with their dishes.

The judges had a very tough decision, and after tallying up both the judges and their fellow students’ scores, it is Team 2, Harna and Vanda, that took out the title of 2010 GV MasterChef!

Congratulations!!

And congratulations to all the contestants that took place, it was a fabulous competition and we hope you enjoyed it!

MasterChef Round 3

Yesterday was our GV MasterChef Round 3!

This week’s secret ingredient was parmesan cheese. The three teams were Team 1: Angel and Linda; Team 2: Marija and Melissa; and Team 3: Oriana and Rina.

It was another tough competition, and all the teams cooked some delicious meals. But the winner, after much deliberation, was Team 3, Oriana and Rina!

Congratulations to all! The final will be held next week, with the three winners, Oriana and Rina, Vanda and Harna, and Jonas and Nathalia, battling it out for the title of GV Brisbane’s Masterchef!

MasterChef Round 2

Yesterday our students competed in the second round of the GV MasterChef competition!

The teams were Team 1: Harna and Vanda; Team 2: Cherry and Rina; and Team 3: Oriana and Trudi (these two were very brave new students, they started this Monday!)

The secret ingredient the students needed to use yesterday in their cooking was eggs.

It was another great cook-off, with all teams cooking up some wonderful dishes, but it was Team 1 that won with a delicious chicken and egg dish.

Congratulations to all our fabulous contestants!

Stay tuned for next weeks’ Round 3!

Friday Graduation BBQ

We had our monthly Graduation BBQ today. Asher’s Pre-Intermediate class put on a great BBQ, cooking sausages, fried rice and more. Thanks for a great lunch! We wish all students that graduated today the best in their travels and hope to see you back one day!

GV Brisbane’s Masterchef Competition Begins!

Yesterday our very own version of Masterchef began.

This is based on the TV series, and student contestants are given a budget of $20 and an hour to purchase ingredients and then cook a dish of their own, using a secret ingredient which we provide at the beginning of the competition.

This week’s secret ingredient was: Cream

We had three teams this week, Team 1: Jonas and Nathalia; Team 2: Veridiana and Rosana; and Team 3: Dante and Cherry.

They all made some amazing dishes, with Jonas and Nathalia making a wonderful plate of desserts, Veridiana and Rosana making prawn risotto and Dante and Cherry cooking up lamb with onion, black pepper and cream sauce.

It was a tough decision for our judges, but the winners were Team 1, Jonas and Nathalia!

Congratulations to all our contestants!

Don’t forget the second round is next Monday, if you would like to be a contestant, see Robyn today!

Friday Cooking Activity

Last Friday our students learnt to make Lamingtons.

Many thanks to Yuki, Kuan, Amy and Ju for their help washing up and cleaning after the activity.
