Tomaz’s success story

Tomaz Zitek, who was studying with us for 40 weeks, was successful in finding a company that was happy to sponsor him for a Business visa.

He is a very likeable, mature and highly informed student. Whenever the class struggled with some specific information, Tomaz had the answer ready!

We are all very proud and happy that he has landed himself this job restoring pipe organs for the Brisbane City Town Hall.

We would like to share his success story and new challenge!

Hi, Thomas. Can you tell us something about yourself?
Yes, certainly, my name is Thomas Zitek, I come from Slovenia. It is a small country at the heart of Europe. In May this year I completed 40 years.

Why did you decide to study English in Australia?

Last year, 2010, due to the economic crisis, I was made redundant twice as a “technological surplus”. Sometime in May, the decision was made to a third dismissal do not think waiting around in the company I was employed as an Assistant designer. In addition, I had some time thinking about resettling elsewhere, “warmer”. I am a man who does not like winter, snow and ice on roads in the morning. On the Internet I found the current migration agent, who advised me for another school, due to better prices but I decided on Global Village.

When did you arrive in Brisbane?

I arrived in Brisbane last December. I started to attend lessons  the week before Christmas, 20th December. After passing the test, I was classified as Pre-Intermediate.

An interesting fact is your attendance. How were youso regular?

Often times I watched other students when they are missing at times. But they do not worry, they are taken care of their parents when who pay for school. If you pay by yourself, you watch that you are always present, because you know how to respect money and you don’t want to throw it away. Finally I took the whole course very seriously so as to go to work. I’m really only missing once and even then I had a meeting with the agent on the Sunshine Coast and a few times I missed out on afternoon-class options.
I heard that you managed to get a very interesting job. How did you do it?

I mentioned that I come from Slovenia and I have more than 18 years of work experience. The first 15 years I worked as a designer in an Organ Workshop in Maribor, which operates under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Maribor. In 15 years, I designed over 70 new pipe organs. Due to the very poor pay Jul 2007 I left the company and began in a nearby crane company. And then came the crisis …

In Australia I actually came to find a job and get off the ground here; in short, I shall move here and create my own home. But to achieve this you need some knowledge of English and a job that allows you to survive and a bunch of money for the migration office or the sponsor, which is the best option.

I should mention that from April this year I’m looking for intensive work at least part-time but by the middle of September I found.  In the middle of August I sent a request to work on all major Organ workshops in Australia. And a miracle happened. On the third day, I got an email with the message to come to the workshop for an interview.  Can you imagine what this means?

Can you describe how your interview took place?

On Monday afternoon I agreed to appear in the company. The Administrator adopted me and we waited for the owner, who arrived a few minutes after me. The interview with the owner was quite relaxed; also present was the foreman. They showed me a home workshop and rented warehouse where they stored the main parts of the Brisbane City Hall organ, which is currently undergoing renovation and restoration. Along the way I asked a few technical issues, revealing how we protect vital organ parts of the organ from moisture, etc. After returning to their home workshop with the owners we talked and he told me that he wanted someone who would know exactly details of the organ and would be able to construct and prepare documents, manage the whole project construction, down to the last detail. Here my past work references from my former company  opened the door to Australia.

I was so happy when he informed me that I have the job. We agreed to finish school first because the company works to 3.30pm, and I started on Monday, 3rdOctober.

So you finally got the job?
Yes. I did, and I’m happy that way. In the beginning, I’ll work on the reconstruction of the organ at the Brisbane City Hall.

Oh, congratulations. Excellent Tomaz. Do you have anything to add?
Yes, definitely. Sincere thanks to all teachers at the school and all my classmates who adopted me as one of the older students; nine months is quite a long period of study!
Thanks again, and all the best to everyone.

I should also tell you that I passed my IELTS test, so I can apply for residency!

This is my story – come here, learn to speak English and get back my dream job.

What do you want more beautiful. In Slovenia we say: “His ax fell in the honey.”
