Ben’s Grammar Tip of the Week

Articles

In English we have simple grammar rules for articles, compared to other languages.

We have 4 articles:

A /An = Singular Nouns

The = Singular or Plural Nouns

(None)  = Plural Nouns

  • When we use A/An simply means ‘ANY’.

When we are speaking to someone about something in –general we use A or An for a non specific noun.

ben

I want a dog

in this example, what dog do I want? …..That is right, – ‘any’ dog. So A is ANY

  • When we use ‘the’ it means specific noun or in this case that dog.

That makes the listener think of the same object as you do.

I want the dog I saw yesterday.

in this example, what dog do I want? …..That is right, ‘the” dog i saw yesterday. So THE is that specific noun (dog)

  • And finally, with plural nouns when we do not use an article it means the same as ‘A’ or ‘AN’ (any)

I love seeing dogs at the pet store.

in this example, which dogs?… That is right, any dogs 🙂
