Ben’s Grammar Tip of the Week

Wish can be complicated

*we have to look what type of wish it is so we can use the correct tense.

In English we use “incorrect” grammar to show that something is unreal or untrue.

  • Wish in present (state) = Past Simple

I wish I had a car

  • Wish in present (activity) = Past continuous

I wish I were/was eating a cake

  • Wish in past = Past Perfect

I wish I had not gone to New Zealand

  • Wish for annoyance = Would+ inf

I wish it would stop raining

!!!So make sure you think about the type of wish before you say it!!!
