Meet our Teachers – Blair! 😎

It’s that time again where we meet yet another part of our amazing Lexis team members. Because, let’s face it… Without our wonderful teachers, Lexis would not exist!! 🙂 This week, let’s meet Blair! Blair has been with Lexis Brisbane for over a year now, and is currently teaching one of the Upper Intermediate classes. His students just adore him! 😍

We asked Blair to answer our Teacher’s Questionnaire, and here’s what he had to say…:

What languages can you speak?
English (I hope), Japanese, some Spanish and terrible French!

When you were young, what did you aspire to become?
A Writer or a crazy professor.

What is it you love about Brisbane?
I love the beautiful, fresh food and the outdoor lifestyle. I prefer the Brisbane laid-back way of life too.

What’s your favourite colour?
Blue.

At midnight on a Saturday, where will we find you?
Baptising myself in WINE!! 😂

What about at 7pm on a Sunday night?

Bill Bryson.

Describe Brisbane in 1 word…:
Undercelebrated.

What should students do/see while in Brisbane?

Your English learning tip for students is…:

Thanks for being such an awesome and wonderful teacher, Blair! We love having you be apart of the #LexisFamily! ❤ ❤

Stay tuned next Wednesday for more Meet the Teachers! 🙂

Student Testimonial – Let’s meet Asumi!

Everyone, meet the lovely Asumi! 🙂 Asumi has been with us here at Lexis Brisbane for 8 weeks, and unfortunately we have to say goodbye to her tomorrow! 😦 Asumi brought such positive energy to her classes and everyone admired her hard work!

Asumi Ekka.jpg

Asumi (pictured right) with her fellow volunteer helper.

During her stay here in Brisbane, Asumi accomplished many things. Her most treasured memory was when she volunteered at this year’s Ekka. Asumi applied through the Queensland Cancer Council’s recruitment agency, and was accepted to lend a helping hand at the show. “I helped for 2 days from 8:30am until 12:30pm. My job was to hand out Ekka show maps, and sell fundraising badges”. Asumi really enjoyed her time helping the public and raising money for a good cause. “I was often asked for directions, and it felt good to show them around. I felt so lucky to share this experience with my team members”.

We sat down with Asumi today and asked her some other questions about Brisbane and her experience at Lexis. Take a look below at what she had to say.

What course did you study at Lexis?
I was in the Pre-Intermediate General English course.

What do you think of your classes and teachers?
I think the classes are good! Both my classmates and teachers are very kind.

Why did you choose Brisbane? Are you happy with your choice?
I heard that Brisbane was a very comfortable place to live. I’m really happy with my choice.

Do you live close to the city?
Yes, I live close to the city. I share a house with other students.

Did you ever participate in our homestay program? What did you think about it?
Yes, I lived in homestay for about 6 weeks. It was very interesting, and my host family were very kind. 🙂

What do you like most about Brisbane?
The people here are very kind! Everyone is always so friendly! 😀

What are your plans for when you return to Japan?
I would like to work with foreign people.

We’re so happy for what you’ve achieved during your stay, Asumi! We hope you continue to make more wonderful memories in the future! ❤ ❤

We love hearing about our Lexis Family success stories, so if you would like to feature in one of our Student Testimonials, just come and see Tara at Reception! 🙂

Student Testimonial – Cristiano

Today we said farewell to another Lexis legend. Cristiano has been studying at Lexis for over a year, and today was his final day! Cristiano has come a long way since beginning his English learning journey with us, starting out from absolute Beginner, now graduating with an Advanced certificate! 🙂 We’re so proud of how far you have come!

Cristiano 1.jpg

Cristiano with his Advanced English teacher Matt and his Upper Intermediate teacher Sarah.

Before coming to Brisbane, Cristiano hadn’t spoken a word of English. He only knew basic words such as colours and numbers. On his first day at Lexis, Cristiano had mixed emotions. “I can’t describe my first day – it was a mixture of happiness and feeling nervous. But I knew I was excited to start”. Cristiano’s first teacher at Lexis was the lovely Paola, who was just as excited to help kick start Cristiano’s English learning adventure. She is super proud of her student’s accomplishments. ❤

We sat down with Cristiano today to ask him a couple of questions about life in Brisbane; at Lexis and Australia! Here’s what he had to say:

Which country are you from?
I’m from Brazil.

What do you think about your classes and your teachers?
I’m really glad with my teachers – especially Sarah. She has been my teacher since Intermediate class, and has taught me everything I know. All the classes are great. I have learned a lot since arriving 1 year ago. It’s amazing how much I have learned in such a short time.

So why did you choose Brisbane out of all the places in the world?
I chose Brisbane because the weather is quite similar to my city back home in Brazil. I also have a friend who lives in Brisbane and has been here for almost 4 years.

Did you work while you were here?
I got a job through my friend here in Brisbane. It’s great for paying the bills, but I found it a little difficult studying full-time and working. It was a great experience though.

What is your most memorable experience here?
I’ve had so many great experiences, but if I had to choose one, it would be the people that I have met along the way. 🙂

What do you like most about Brisbane/Australia and why?
The environment and the people. Everything and everyone are so nice. I love this city – I love this country!!

What are your plans for when you return to you home country?
It’s actually a little early to talk about my return as I still have 1 year in Brisbane. So I actually think Brisbane has a lot planned for me before I go back! 🙂

Thanks for chatting with with us, Cristiano. We wish you all the best of luck for the rest of your adventures! Please keep in touch! 🙂

We love hearing from all of our students! So if you would also like to have your say, or even fill out one of our student questionnaires, then please see Tara at reception!

😀 Have a great weekend, everyone! 😀

Testimonial Wednesday – Santiago

We’re back with another student testimonial – let’s meet Santiago!
santiago 1

Santiago arrived in Australia from Colombia and joined Lexis Brisbane at the beginning of 2015. He has spent the last year learning not only English but also about Australia, a new way of life and most importantly himself. Santiago had big dreams before arriving to Australia, and has worked very hard every day since.
santiago 2

Santiago was a big believer in the English Only rule at Lexis, and always encouraged his friends and classmates to use English. He studied English back home in Colombia where he also completed the FCE exam, but said he regretted not coming here sooner! Just last week he completed the IELTS test and is now eagerly awaiting the results to arrive next week. “I’m feeling confident with the reading part, but I was a little nervous with the speaking part. Once I started though, I felt much better”. We’re confident you did well! 🙂

Before Santiago parted ways, we asked him a few questions regarding his time here and his thoughts about Brisbane. Here’s what he had to say…:

What courses did you do at Lexis English?
I did CAE, CPE and IELTS.

What do you think about your classes and teachers?
The classes are full of content and the teachers always try to find the way to transmit their knowledge to the students.

Why did you choose Brisbane? Are you happy with your choice?
Brisbane is a nice cosmopolitan city. I could meet people from all over the world. I find the Brisbane weather easier to cope with as well. I’d never regret choosing this city.

Where are you currently living in Brisbane?
I’m currently sharing a house with 3 people close to the city.

What is your most memorable experience here in Brisbane/Australia?
There are heaps of memorable experiences. I can’t choose just one!

What are your plans for when you return to your home country?
I’m not actually returning to my country just yet. At least not for another 3 years.

Although his journey with us at Lexis Brisbane is over, another journey has begun. Santiago will be enrolled at QUT this July where he will be completing a degree in Business – how cool is that?!

Congratulations for achieving your goals, Santiago. We wish you the best of luck with your new journey! You are always welcome back to Lexis Brisbane any time. 🙂 Be sure to keep in touch!

If you would also like to write a testimonial about your time here at Lexis/Australia, see Tara at Reception and grab a questionnaire. We love hearing from you guys! 🙂

I started in Upper Intermediate, and now I am in the Advanced class. I am here until January 8th next year.

I enjoy spending time in Brisbane very much and I’m very happy with my choice. Before coming here, I heard that Brisbane is very friendly – and that’s true! Plus, I really like that it is really close to the most beautiful beaches! The weather is also perfect for me.

I’m living in my own house by myself.

Student Testimonial – Alex Brun

It has been one week since Alex’s final day here at Lexis Brisbane – we still miss you!!

Alex was a student at Lexis Brisbane for 1 year, and during this time he became a big part of the Lexis family. Being such a courteous, positive person, he respected everyone around him and always encouraged his classmates to do their best.  Alex always had a smile on his face (and a Red Bull in hand)!

Alex 1

When Alex first arrived in Australia from France, he found it very difficult to say even the simplest of words. To this day, he has worked very hard and achieved so much!  He most recently studied in an advanced level IELTS preparation class, and received a great score of 5.o on his official IELTS exam – woo hoo!! We could not be prouder!! 🙂

Before Alex left, we asked him to answer a few questions about his time here in Australia. Here’s what he had to say…:

Why did you choose Brisbane? Were you happy with your choice?
Yes, I’m pretty happy with my choice. I booked my 1 year abroad through an agency back in France, and I’m really happy they recommended Lexis to me!

Where did you live while in Australia? Were you in Student Accommodation or did you try Homestay?
I lived in Homestay with a family that looked after many International Students. My family was so nice. We spent many nights down by the river next to the house, chatting and laughing and having a good time. Thank you so much!!

What did like most about Brisbane?
The location – it is great! It is just the right size and not too far from other major cities/locations.

What was your most memorable experience in Brisbane/Australia?
Everything! It was the best experience of my life!

So what are your plans for when you return home?
Firstly, I’ll enjoy Christmas time with my family. After the holidays, I’ll start applying for new jobs where I can use my English skills.

We are very excited for what your future holds mate, and can’t wait to hear about all your new adventure back home! We wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose to pursue!

Love, your friends at Lexis Brisbane! 🙂

“In the beginning I tried to find a nice school… but I found a family”

I’ve been studying at Lexis School for 1 year and 3 months and today I graduated in English. I remember at the beginning when I wasn’t able to say simple things and it was really difficult. However I always had with me amazing friends and wonderful teachers who encouraged me and supported me all the time and never allowed me to give up.… – Talyta (Brazil)
