Celebrate the Chinese New Year this weekend! :)

This weekend marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year, and this time it is the year of the Monkey. Those of you who were born in 1920, 19321944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992 or 2004, then this might be your lucky year! 😀

Although the new year actually begins on Monday 8th of February, celebrations and festivities will kick off over the weekend. Chinese New Year – also known as The Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year is an event that takes place every year, and is widely celebrated in all parts of the world. Brisbane will have its very own celebrations starting this weekend and running through until next weekend, so if you’re free why don’t you check it out? 🙂

This Friday night as part of the BrisAsia Festival, the William Jolly Bridge will be lit up with local Chinese-Australian artist Pamela Mei-Ling’s artwork. You can watch this eye-catching light projection from anywhere along the riverside from 6pm. The bridge will light up every night until the end of the CNY celebrations. Be sure to have a look! 🙂

If you’ve got access to a car, you might want to have a look at this. The Moreton Bay Lunar New Year festivities are being held this Saturday in Caboolture (about 45 minutes north of Brisbane). This is the first time this event is being held here, and they have so much planned for the grand opening! There will be free entertainment starting from 4pm along with traditional music and Chinese dance, Asian-infused cultural experiences and delicious traditional Asian food presented in an Eat Street-style. Don’t worry if you don’t have a car. At the end of the night, there will be a grand finale fireworks display that is guaranteed to be amazing! Read more about the event here.

This one is my personal suggestion! Chinese New Year is not complete without having some delicious Yum-Cha! There is a restaurant in Fortitude Valley that is open 7 days a week called Oriental Yum-Cha. They do all you can eat dumplings (YUUUUM!), and will even have New Year celebrations of their own. Take a look at their Facebook page for pricing, opening hours and location.

Monday is when the true celebrations begin and there is plenty to see and do in Fortitude Valley’s Chinatown Mall! Activities such a lion dancing, Chinese inspired markets and live entertainment will be in full swing from here until next weekend. To see what’s on, have a look at the BrisAsia official website.

Be sure to follow this space into next weekend, where there will be plenty more CNY related activities for you to have a look at. For now, enjoy the weekend and as always have fun! 🙂
